What Does Shilajit Do for Men? What the Research Actually Shows
The short answer
Shilajit is a mineral resin, not a hormone or a steroid. A handful of small human studies in men suggest it may support testosterone levels in middle-aged men, help muscles hold their strength during tiring exercise, and improve sperm count in men with low counts. Those studies are promising but small, so treat Shilajit as a daily supplement worth trying, not a guaranteed fix.
Most of what you read about Shilajit for men is either wildly overhyped or written to sell. We sell Shilajit, so we have every reason to oversell it too. Instead, here is what the research on men actually found, how strong it is, and what it does not show.
What is Shilajit, in one paragraph
Shilajit is a dark, sticky resin that seeps from high mountain rock, mostly in the Himalayas. It forms over centuries as plant matter breaks down, and it is rich in fulvic acid and trace minerals. It has been used in traditional Ayurvedic practice for a very long time, usually as a daily tonic dissolved in warm water or milk. If you want the full background, read what Shilajit is and how it forms.
1. Testosterone in middle-aged men
This is the study most brands quote. In 2016, researchers published a randomised, placebo-controlled trial in the journal Andrologia. Seventy-five healthy men aged 45 to 55 took either 500 mg of purified Shilajit a day or a placebo for 90 days. By the end, the Shilajit group's total testosterone was about 20% higher and free testosterone about 19% higher than at the start, a significant difference compared with placebo (study summary).
That is a real, measured result. But it is one study, in one age group, using one specific branded extract. It does not tell us what happens in younger men, in men with already healthy levels, or with other Shilajit products. And a 20% change within the normal range is not the same as what testosterone therapy does. Shilajit is not a steroid, and we explain why in Is Shilajit a Steroid?
2. Holding strength during tiring exercise
In 2019, a team at the University of Nebraska tested Shilajit on 63 recreationally active men for eight weeks (study summary). The men took 250 mg, 500 mg or a placebo each day, then did a fatiguing leg exercise. Among the stronger half of each group, the 500 mg group lost about 9% of their strength, compared with about 16 to 17% in the other two groups. The 500 mg group also showed lower levels of a marker linked to collagen breakdown.
In plain terms: Shilajit did not make anyone stronger, but at the higher amount it may have helped muscles keep their strength for longer when tired. It is one small study, and the clearest effect showed up in half of each group, so it needs repeating before anyone can call it settled.
3. Sperm count in men with low counts
A 2010 study, also in Andrologia, gave 200 mg of processed Shilajit a day (100 mg twice daily) for 90 days to men with low sperm counts. Of 60 men recruited, 35 with counts below 20 million per millilitre took part. Researchers reported a 61% rise in total sperm count and improvements in sperm movement and testosterone (study details).
The catch is important: this study had no placebo group. Everyone took Shilajit, so we cannot tell how much of the change came from Shilajit and how much from other things. If you and your partner are trying for a baby, Shilajit is not a substitute for seeing a fertility specialist.
What the research does not show
You will see Shilajit sold for erectile problems, muscle building, weight loss and more. There are no good human studies behind those claims. We look at the erection question honestly in Is Shilajit Good for Erectile Dysfunction?, and the short version is that the evidence is not there.
It is also worth knowing that all three studies above used the same branded extract, and the trials using it were at least partly funded by its maker (Examine). That does not make the results wrong, but it is a reason to want independent studies, and a reason not to assume every Shilajit product will behave the same way.
So why do so many men take it?
Mostly as a simple daily habit. Men tell us they take Shilajit in the morning as part of a routine around work, training and recovery, and many like that it is a single natural ingredient rather than a long list of additives. That is a reasonable way to use it: steadily, at a sensible amount, with realistic expectations. Our Shilajit vs Tongkat Ali comparison is useful if you are weighing it against other options men often look at.
How men usually take it
The studies above used 200 to 500 mg a day. For resin, that is roughly a pea-sized amount, dissolved in warm water, milk or tea, once a day. For drops, it is 5 to 10 drops a day in a drink. Start at the lower end for the first week or two. Most people give it four to eight weeks before judging how it suits them. Our usage guide covers timing and amounts in more detail.
Who should check first
Speak to your doctor before taking Shilajit if you take prescriptions (especially for blood pressure or blood sugar), are on testosterone therapy, have a prostate condition, high iron levels, gout, or kidney or liver problems. Our who should not take Shilajit guide lists the rest, and Shilajit and medications covers prescriptions in detail.
Quality matters more than anything
Studies use carefully purified Shilajit. Much of what is sold online is not. Raw or poorly cleaned Shilajit can carry heavy metals and other contaminants, so whatever brand you choose, ask to see independent lab reports. Ours are on our lab reports page, and our 30g Shilajit resin and 30ml Shilajit drops are tested batch by batch.
Frequently asked questions
Does Shilajit increase testosterone?
One 90-day trial in healthy men aged 45 to 55 found total testosterone about 20% higher with 500 mg a day than at the start. That is encouraging but limited to one small study, and results may differ for younger men or other products.
How long does Shilajit take to work for men?
The men's studies ran for 8 to 13 weeks. Most people take it daily for four to eight weeks before deciding how it suits them.
Is Shilajit safe for men to take every day?
Purified Shilajit appears well tolerated by healthy adults at the amounts used in studies. Check with your doctor first if you take prescriptions or have a health condition.
Is Shilajit a steroid?
No. Shilajit is a natural mineral resin. It contains no hormones or steroids, and it is not on sporting banned lists.
