Is Shilajit a Steroid? The Honest Answer
The short answer
No. Shilajit is not a steroid, and it is not a hormone. It is a natural mineral resin made up mainly of fulvic acid, humic substances and trace minerals. It contains no testosterone and no synthetic compounds, and it does not work the way anabolic steroids do.
If you have spent any time on TikTok or in gym forums lately, you have probably seen Shilajit described as "nature's steroid" or "the legal steroid". It makes for a catchy video, but it is simply not true, and it leaves a lot of people confused about what they are actually buying. So let's clear it up properly: what a steroid actually is, what Shilajit actually is, where the confusion comes from, and what it means for you if you train or compete.
What is a steroid, actually?
In chemistry, a steroid is a specific type of molecule built around a four-ring carbon structure. Your body makes several of them naturally, including testosterone, oestrogen and cortisol. When people talk about "steroids" in everyday conversation, though, they usually mean one of two things.
The first is anabolic steroids. These are synthetic versions of testosterone, made in a lab and used to build muscle quickly. They directly flood the body with a hormone, they are controlled substances in the UK and the USA, and they are banned in sport.
The second is corticosteroids, such as prednisolone or hydrocortisone creams. These are prescribed to calm inflammation and have nothing to do with building muscle.
Shilajit falls into neither group. It is not a lab-made hormone, it does not contain one, and it is not prescribed for anything.
So what is Shilajit made of?
Shilajit is a dark, sticky resin that seeps from rock crevices high in mountain ranges such as the Himalayas. It forms over centuries as plant matter breaks down and becomes trapped between layers of rock. If you want the full story, we cover it in how Shilajit is formed naturally.
What you end up with is a blend of:
Fulvic acid, the main active component, which helps carry minerals into your cells.
Humic substances, which work alongside fulvic acid.
Dibenzo-alpha-pyrones (DBPs), natural compounds linked to how cells produce energy.
Trace minerals such as iron, zinc, magnesium and selenium.
None of these are steroids, and none of them are hormones. For a deeper look at each component, read what Shilajit is made of.
Why do people think Shilajit is a steroid?
Mostly because of testosterone. The most talked-about study on Shilajit, published in the journal Andrologia in 2016, gave healthy men aged 45 to 55 either 250mg of purified Shilajit twice a day or a placebo for 90 days. The Shilajit group finished with total testosterone around 20% higher than the placebo group.
Here is the important part that the "natural steroid" videos skip: Shilajit did not add testosterone to anyone's body. The researchers' findings suggest it may support the body's own hormone production, which is a completely different thing from injecting a synthetic hormone. Researchers who study it describe any testosterone effect seen in trials as modest and within normal physiological levels, nothing like testosterone replacement therapy, and certainly nothing like anabolic steroids.
It is also worth being honest about the limits. That study was fairly small, it looked only at healthy middle-aged men, and it was funded by the company that makes the Shilajit extract used in it. The authors themselves called for larger and longer studies. It is promising, not proof. We go through the research in more detail on our Shilajit and testosterone page.
Shilajit vs steroids at a glance
What it is: Shilajit is a natural mineral resin. Anabolic steroids are synthetic hormones.
Contains testosterone: Shilajit, no. Anabolic steroids, yes, or a modified version of it.
How it works: Shilajit supplies minerals and fulvic acid that support normal body processes. Steroids override the body's own hormone balance.
Speed: Shilajit is gradual, usually judged over weeks to months. Steroids act fast and dramatically.
Legal status: Shilajit is sold as a food supplement. Anabolic steroids are controlled substances.
Can athletes take Shilajit?
As of this writing, Shilajit itself is not named on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List. But that is not the whole story, and if you compete, this part matters.
Under WADA rules, athletes are strictly responsible for anything found in their body, whatever the source. The real risk with Shilajit is not Shilajit itself, it is contamination. Some supplements on the market are poorly purified, mixed with other ingredients, or not what the label says. A contaminated product could put a banned substance in your system without you knowing.
If you are a tested athlete, only use Shilajit that comes with proper lab documentation, check with your sport's anti-doping body before starting, and keep a record of the batch you use. It is exactly why every Minerals Pitch batch is tested and why we publish our lab reports. You can also read why lab testing matters for Shilajit to know what to look for on any brand's report.
Is Shilajit safe?
Purified, properly tested Shilajit is generally well tolerated by healthy adults. The bigger safety question is quality, since raw or poorly processed resin can carry heavy metals and other contaminants. Our guide to authentic vs fake Shilajit shows you how to tell the difference.
Some people should speak to their doctor before trying it, including anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding, anyone with high iron levels, and anyone taking regular prescription treatments, particularly lithium or thyroid tablets. You can read more in our article on Shilajit side effects.
The bottom line
Shilajit is not a steroid, not a hormone and not a shortcut. It is a mineral-rich resin that people have taken for centuries as part of a daily routine, and the early research on it is interesting rather than dramatic. If anyone sells it to you as a "natural steroid", treat that as a red flag about the seller, not a feature of the product.
If you want to try it the honest way, start with our 30g Himalayan Shilajit resin or our Shilajit drops, both lab tested for heavy metals, aflatoxins, microbes and pesticides. Our Shilajit usage guide covers how much to take and when.
Frequently asked questions
Is Shilajit a natural steroid?
No. Shilajit contains no steroids or hormones. It is a mineral resin made mostly of fulvic acid, humic substances and trace minerals.
Does Shilajit contain testosterone?
No. One clinical study found that purified Shilajit may support the body's own testosterone production in healthy men, but Shilajit itself contains no testosterone.
Is Shilajit banned in sport?
Shilajit is not named on the WADA Prohibited List as of this writing. Athletes are still responsible for anything in their system, so contaminated products are the real risk. Use lab-tested Shilajit and check with your anti-doping body.
Will Shilajit show up on a drug test?
Pure Shilajit contains nothing that standard drug tests look for. A contaminated or adulterated product is a different matter, which is why lab-tested Shilajit matters.
