How to Take Shilajit: Dosage, Best Time and Practical Guide
The short answer
Most people take 300 to 500mg of Shilajit resin a day, about the size of a pea, dissolved in warm water or milk. With drops, that is 5 to 10 drops. Start with less for the first few days, take it at the same time each day (mornings suit most people), and give it a fair trial of around two to three months.
Shilajit is simple to take once you know the basics, but there is a lot of conflicting advice online. This guide brings everything together in one place: how much to take, how to prepare it, when to take it, how long it takes, and how to store it.
How much Shilajit per day
Resin: 300 to 500mg once a day. That is roughly a pea-sized piece, or a small scoop with the spoon that comes with your jar.
Drops: 5 to 10 drops a day (about 0.25 to 0.5ml).
Capsules or other formats: follow the amount on that product's label.
If you are new to Shilajit, start lower, at around 100 to 200mg of resin or 5 drops, for the first few days, then build up. There is no benefit in going above the usual range; with a mineral-rich resin, more is not better.
How to prepare it
Resin: take your pea-sized amount and stir it into a glass of warm water, warm milk or herbal tea. Use warm, not boiling, liquid. Genuine resin takes a couple of minutes to dissolve fully with gentle stirring. Some people add a little honey because the taste is earthy and strong.
Drops: add them to water, tea or milk and drink. It takes seconds.
Pure resin should dissolve without leaving much grit. A lot of sediment or an oily film can be a sign of poor quality, which we cover in authentic vs fake Shilajit.
When is the best time to take Shilajit?
For most people, the morning works best, either on an empty stomach or with a light breakfast. It is easy to remember as part of a morning routine, and many people prefer it earlier in the day. If you find it unsettles your stomach on its own, take it with food instead.
The most important thing is consistency. A daily dose at a time that suits you will always beat a perfectly timed dose you keep forgetting. For more detail, read the best time to take Shilajit.
Can you take Shilajit at night?
Yes, many people take it in the evening in warm milk, and it does not keep most people awake. That said, a few people do feel more alert after taking it. If you find it affects your sleep, simply move it to the morning.
How long does Shilajit take to work?
Shilajit is not a quick fix. Some people say they notice a difference in their energy within the first couple of weeks, while for others it takes longer. Most of the human studies on Shilajit ran for around 8 to 12 weeks, which is a sensible timeframe to judge it over. Give it two to three months of daily use before deciding. Keep a simple note of your energy and sleep before you start and every few weeks after, so you are judging it on what you actually notice.

Does Shilajit expire?
Pure Shilajit resin is very stable and, stored properly, keeps for a long time. Its quality can slowly decline with heat, direct sunlight, air and moisture, so:
Keep the jar tightly sealed.
Store it somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sunlight.
Do not leave it somewhere very hot, such as a car in summer.
Use a clean, dry spoon so no moisture gets in.
Resin often goes hard when cold and soft when warm. That is normal. Products with added ingredients, such as gummies, usually have a much shorter shelf life than pure resin. Always check the date on your pack.
Safety first
Only use Shilajit that has been purified and independently lab tested, because raw or poorly processed resin can contain heavy metals and other contaminants. You can see our results on our lab reports page.
Shilajit is not suitable for everyone. Avoid it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and speak to your doctor first if you have high iron levels, gout, low blood pressure or diabetes, or if you take regular prescriptions. Building a routine that lasts
Pick a time that fits your day, keep the jar somewhere you will see it, and make it part of something you already do, such as your morning drink. Shilajit works best as one part of a healthy routine alongside good food, sleep and exercise, not as a replacement for them.
