# When to Take Ashwagandha: Morning or Night?

**By Minerals Pitch** · 2026-10-14

The short answer

There is no proven best time to take ashwagandha. No study has compared morning and night directly. What matters most is taking it every day. Many people take it in the evening because it can make some people drowsy and because the sleep studies found the clearest benefits, while others prefer the morning or split the dose. Taking it with food helps if it upsets your stomach.

"When should I take ashwagandha?" is one of the most common questions people ask once they buy it, and you will find confident answers online pointing both ways. The honest answer is simpler: the timing matters far less than the consistency. Here is what we actually know, and how to pick the time that suits you.

## What the research says about timing

No clinical trial has tested morning against night. Studies have simply chosen a time and stuck to it. Some stress studies gave ashwagandha after dinner, and some sleep studies gave it twice a day, morning and evening ([Cooper Aerobics](https://www.cooperaerobics.com/blog/when-is-the-best-time-to-take-ashwagandha/)). Benefits for stress and sleep showed up over 6 to 12 weeks of daily use in both kinds of study ([NIH Office of Dietary Supplements](https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Ashwagandha-HealthProfessional/)). So any time of day can work, as long as you take it every day.

## Does ashwagandha make you sleepy?

It can, for some people. Drowsiness is one of the side effects most often reported ([NCCIH](https://www.nccih.nih.gov/health/ashwagandha)). It is not a sleeping tablet and it does not knock most people out, but if you notice you feel slower or sleepier after taking it, that is a good reason to move it to the evening. If it makes you drowsy, don't drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you.

## Taking ashwagandha at night

Evening is the most popular choice, for three reasons. Any drowsiness happens when you want to wind down anyway. The sleep research found the clearest improvements, especially in people with poor sleep and at 600 mg a day for 8 weeks or more ([NIH ODS](https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Ashwagandha-HealthProfessional/)). And it fits the traditional way of taking it, as a powder stirred into warm milk before bed. Many people take it 30 to 60 minutes before sleep.

## Taking ashwagandha in the morning

Morning suits people who don't feel drowsy on it and want it to be part of their daily routine, for example with breakfast. Some people simply remember it better in the morning, which matters more than anything else. If you take it in the morning and feel sleepy by mid-morning, switch to the evening.

## Splitting the dose

Many products, and many studies, split the daily amount in two: half in the morning and half in the evening. This is a reasonable middle ground, especially at higher daily amounts, and it may be gentler on the stomach. Keep the total within the amount on your product's label. Our guide on [how much ashwagandha to take per day](/blogs/posts/how-much-ashwagandha-per-day) explains the amounts used in studies.

## With food or on an empty stomach?

Either is fine. Stomach upset and loose stools are among the most common side effects, so taking it with a meal is a sensible place to start. If it sits well, you can try it without food.

## How to choose your time

- **Taking it for sleep or winding down:** evening, 30 to 60 minutes before bed.
- **It makes you drowsy:** evening only.
- **No drowsiness and you want it in your routine:** morning with breakfast.
- **Taking a higher daily amount:** split it between morning and evening.

Whatever you choose, stick with it for at least 6 to 8 weeks before judging, because that is how long the studies ran. And remember that safety has only been studied for up to about three months at a time. ## Ashwagandha, Shilajit and your daily routine

If you are building a simple daily routine, you may also be looking at Shilajit, another traditional Ayurvedic daily tonic. Many people take Shilajit in the morning in warm water or tea and ashwagandha in the evening, so the two fit easily into one day. They are different things, though: ashwagandha is a root whose research centres on stress and sleep, while Shilajit is a mineral-rich resin with its own, smaller body of research. We compare them honestly in [Shilajit vs Ashwagandha](/blogs/posts/shilajit-vs-ashwagandha). No study has tested the two together, so if you take medication for blood sugar, blood pressure or your thyroid, check with your doctor before combining them.
