# Shilajit vs Tongkat Ali: Which One Do You Actually Need?

**By Minerals Pitch** · 2026-10-12

The short answer

Shilajit is a mineral-rich resin from high mountain rock, best suited to people looking for broad, everyday support for energy and mineral intake. Tongkat Ali is a root from a Southeast Asian tree, studied mainly for testosterone and libido in men. They work in different ways, so the right choice depends on what you want. Many people take them together, but check with your doctor first if you take any prescriptions.

Scroll through any men's wellness feed and you will see these two names side by side, often in the same capsule. That makes it easy to assume they are similar. They are not. One comes from rock, the other from a tree root. One is mostly about minerals and fulvic acid, the other is mostly about hormones. Here is a straight comparison, so you can decide which one, if either, fits what you are after.

## What is Shilajit?

Shilajit is a dark resin that seeps from rock crevices in high mountain ranges such as the Himalayas. It forms over centuries as plant matter breaks down and becomes trapped between layers of rock. What you end up with is mainly fulvic acid, humic substances and trace minerals such as iron, zinc and magnesium. You can read more in [what Shilajit is made of](/blogs/posts/what-is-shilajit-made-of-fulvic-acid-minerals-more).

People traditionally take it as a daily all-rounder: for energy, stamina, recovery and general vitality. It is usually taken as a pea-sized amount of resin, or as drops, dissolved in warm water or milk.

## What is Tongkat Ali?

Tongkat Ali, also called Long Jack, is the root of _Eurycoma longifolia_, a shrub-like tree that grows in Malaysia, Indonesia and other parts of Southeast Asia. The root is dried and made into extracts, powders and capsules. Traditionally it has been used for male vitality, energy and stress.

Unlike Shilajit, Tongkat Ali is not really about minerals. Its reputation, and most of its research, centres on testosterone and male sexual health.

## What does the research show?

**Tongkat Ali.** A 2022 review that pooled several clinical trials found Tongkat Ali extract raised total testosterone compared with a placebo. The clearest effects were in men whose testosterone was already low and in older men. In healthy young men, the changes were smaller and sometimes not significant. A small trial also found less stress and lower cortisol after four weeks, though that result has not been widely repeated. The researchers noted the trials were small and short, and that extract quality varied.

**Shilajit.** The best-known study gave healthy men aged 45 to 55 purified Shilajit or a placebo for 90 days. Total testosterone ended around 20% higher in the Shilajit group. Other small studies have looked at fatigue, strength retention and recovery. Like Tongkat Ali, the evidence is promising but limited, and some studies were funded by the companies making the extracts. We go into this honestly in [Is Shilajit a Steroid?](/blogs/posts/is-shilajit-a-steroid)

The honest takeaway: neither one is a miracle, and neither one is a steroid. Both have early human research behind them, and both work gradually rather than overnight.

## Shilajit vs Tongkat Ali at a glance

**Source:** Shilajit is a mineral resin from mountain rock. Tongkat Ali is a tree root from Southeast Asia.
**Main components:** Shilajit is fulvic acid, humic substances and trace minerals. Tongkat Ali contains plant compounds called quassinoids and other root extracts.
**Main focus:** Shilajit is a broad, everyday all-rounder. Tongkat Ali is focused mainly on male hormones and libido.
**Who it suits:** Shilajit suits both men and women. Tongkat Ali is mostly studied in, and marketed to, men.
**Forms:** Shilajit is usually resin or drops. Tongkat Ali is usually capsules or powdered extract.
**Speed:** Both are typically judged over weeks to a few months, not days.

## Safety: what to know about each

Both are generally well tolerated by healthy adults in the amounts used in studies, but both have people who should be careful.

With **Tongkat Ali**, trial side effects were mostly mild, such as restlessness or poor sleep. It may affect blood sugar, and one small study found it reduced the absorption of a common blood pressure tablet. Anyone with a hormone-sensitive condition should avoid it unless their doctor agrees. Testing of some products sold in Southeast Asia has also found heavy metals above safe limits, so quality matters.

With **Shilajit**, the main cautions are pregnancy and breastfeeding, high iron levels, gout, and certain prescriptions such as blood pressure, blood sugar, thyroid and lithium medication. We cover these in full in [who should not take Shilajit](/blogs/posts/who-should-not-take-shilajit). Raw or untested Shilajit can also carry heavy metals, which is why lab testing matters.

For both, the same rule applies: only buy from a brand that shows independent lab results. You can see ours on our [lab reports](/pages/lab-reports) page.

## Can you take Shilajit and Tongkat Ali together?

Many people do, and the two are often sold together in the same product. Because they work in different ways, there is no obvious reason they clash for a healthy adult. That said, there are very few studies on taking them together, and both may affect blood sugar, so the effect could add up. If you take any regular prescription, particularly for blood sugar or blood pressure, check with your doctor first.

If you want to try both, a sensible approach is to start one at a time. Take one for a few weeks, see how you feel, then add the other. That way you know which one is doing what.

## So which one do you need?

Choose **Shilajit** if you want a simple daily all-rounder for energy, stamina and mineral intake, if you are a woman, or if you prefer a single natural ingredient with nothing added.

Consider **Tongkat Ali** if you are a man whose main focus is testosterone or libido, ideally after a blood test and a conversation with your doctor about why your levels might be low.
